Clyde River ‘Big Wall’ Ski Expedition

Clyde River ‘Big Wall’ Ski Expedition

This is one of the most unique and exciting skiing expeditions anywhere in the world. The route chosen for this adventure will include some of the most dramatic and breathtaking scenery anywhere on the planet - the “big wall” region near the small Inuit community of Clyde River, on Baffin Island's east coast. This region draws expeditioners, climbers, and filmmakers from all over the world. Known by some as the "Yosemite of the North", the area has also drawn comparisons to the Trango Towers in Pakistan.

Sheer granite rock walls - some over three thousand feet high - guard the entrances to deep fiords, including the Sam Ford Fiord, Walker Arm, and Stewart Valley. The route will take the team close enough to touch these Arctic giants. Under constant daylight, every day will bring new terrain, adventures, and challenges. This is truly one of the wildest, most remote, and spectacular regions of Baffin Island.

The expedition will begin with a drop-off by local Inuit guides - who drive snowmobiles pulling “Qamutiks” (wooden sleds) - at a specific starting point. The route will include river valleys, glaciers, spectacular glacier-carved valleys, and frozen lakes and fiords. The expedition will culminate with the team skiing back to the small Inuit community. Our final night in Clyde River will be either in the hotel or at a home-stay with a local Inuit family. Daily schedules will be weather- and participant-dependent.

Each group member must be physically fit, have previous winter, wilderness-travel experience, and be capable of pulling a small gear/supply sled for two weeks.

"This is the ultimate ski tour. In my years of guiding in Baffin, this trip provides amazing variety, scenery, and a experience second to none." David Reid, Polar Explorer and Senior Black Feather Guide
