Which is your favourite? Weighing in on Delicious Black Feather Meals!
Meal times on Black Feather trips are always a highlight. Fresh air, wholesome activity and fun traveling companions can build up a good appetite. We asked a few guides what their favourite meal is on a Black Feather trip. Here are a few responses!

I have guided at Black Feather for five summers. I also worked at the Packing Centre and have probably packed 100 or more trips, so I can by heart tell you our classic menus.
The meal that takes the cake for me (and not the actual cake we have on day 6) is the dinner we usually have on day three of our longer northern trips. Steak and BBQ-style potatoes and vegetables. This is a classic for me at home, and it comes at a point in the trip when the group is really getting to know each other and come together. There’s nothing quite like a good wood fired steak on the shore of a beautiful mountain river with great people.

My absolute favourite Black Feather menu item has to be the Cinnamon Buns. Mornings can be rainy and cold, but having a freshly baked Cinnamon Bun with my coffee, is to me, the best way to start the day on a high note. It’s a treat that I don’t expect having in the backcountry and always brings me joy! My guide tip is that I melt some cream cheese and add a dash of maple syrup to make a delicious icing.

Although each evening on a trip I seem to declare “oh, this is my favourite meal” … I have to say that Rockin’ Moroccan Stew has to be the best. It is vegetarian/vegan, gluten free and dairy free. It can be made on day 1 or day 20. It has a very interesting group of spices creating a taste which you don’t find in any other recipe on our trips. It is colourful and smells great. It uses sweet potatoes (which I love). The combination of ingredients make a complete protein. It can be accompanied by couscous, rice or quinoa. And, finally, if there are leftovers, it also tastes great at lunch the next day!

The big challenge for me has always been deciding my favourite meal. However, I have narrowed it down to these!
Breakfast: Frittata, extra cheesy
Lunch: Taco salad, with lots of sour cream and hot sauce
Dinner: Baked ham and scalloped potatoes with coleslaw
However, my favourite meal last year while working at Black Feather was Muskox Stew in Kugluktuk, at the end of the Coppermine River, made by local elder Mavis Elias Adjun. Eaten while looking out on Coronation gulf, magical.
