Auyuittuq National Park in Canada’s eastern Arctic has some of the most beautiful alpine scenery on earth. This backpacking expedition crosses the entire Akshayuk Pass, including the rarely-seen northern section in the Owl River valley. With Black Feather you can choose to hike this route in either direction – start in Pangnirtung, end in Qikiqtarjuaq, or vice versa.
Both trips begin with a night in a local Inuit community, followed by a motor boat ride the next morning to the trip’s starting point. From there we will put on our packs for the first steps on our 97-km journey. We will ascend river valleys approximately 500m to then descend down to the sea once again. Our final night will be spend in an Inuit community before flights home on the final day.
Our “Auyuittuq Traverse” hiking trips are suitable expeditions for any reasonably fit hiker with some previous backpacking experience. We will be carrying full packs, and, in places, the route is challenging.
