The Coppermine River follows the treeline from the central barrenlands to the Arctic Ocean. Renowned for its wildlife and fascinating history, it has been designated a Canadian Heritage River. This “Getaway” canoe trip is designed to allow you to experience all the amazing white-water and mountain ranges of the Coppermine river within a condensed one week of river travel.  We will fly into the Big Bend of the Coppermine River, an area of historical significance that also marks the beginning of the river’s drop to the Arctic Ocean.  Caribou and muskoxen may graze along the shores as we work our way through fun class I-III rapids, some flatwater, and a lazy river current. There is remarkable bird life, including nesting golden eagles and gyrfalcons. The Arctic char fishing can be exceptional. The river moves through rolling hills, steep-walled canyons and past towering cliffs, and you will have time to take it all in.  The trees get smaller and sparser as we descend through Muskox, Sandstone and Escape Rapids before arriving at Bloody Falls and the one portage of the trip.  After visiting Kugluk Territorial Park, we will paddle right out into the Arctic Ocean as we arrive in the community of Kugluktuk.
