The Spanish River Getaway offers paddlers beautiful scenery, an ever-changing landscape, few portages and some great whitewater challenges. The river flows from its headwaters at Biscotasi and Duke Lakes, the two upstream branches joining at the Forks, then goes on to empty into the North Channel of Lake Huron. The Ontario government’s “Lands for Life” process has named the Spanish River a Provincial Waterway Park, encompassing a narrow strip of land along both shores of the river. The exclusion of logging, mining, hydro and other large-scale exploitive activities help ensure the preservation of this great wild river paddling destination.
Beginning in Sudbury, you will meet your group and guides and hop on the historical “Budd Car” to start your journey down the Spanish River’s West Branch at The Forks. From there, four and a half days’ worth of paddling, portaging, rapid scouting and rapid running await you.
