In 2025, we will offer a special exploratory trip which will take us down the Stone Knife River, a little-known tributary of the Mountain River, in NWT. The Mountain River is our “Guides’ Choice” as the best wilderness canoeing river in Canada. Awesome alpine scenery bathed in constantly-changing colours, dramatic canyons, exciting Class I to III whitewater, and non-stop current – all in a pristine wilderness setting – make this trip a “must” for experienced paddlers. There are exceptional side hikes to mineral springs and tufa formations, alpine ridges, and mountain lookouts. Dall sheep, caribou, wolves, and bears live along the river.
The expedition starts with a dramatic flight through the Mackenzie Mountains to a high, jewel-like alpine lake. From here we will scout, paddle, line and perhaps portage down the Stone Knife River for the first 8 days, until we join the Mountain River and paddle the remaining section, including the stunning third and fourth canyons, to its confluence with the Mackenzie River.
