Overview
Ontario is in east-central Canada, and its name is thought to be derived either from a Huron word meaning “great lake” or from the Iroquoian word, skanadario – which means “beautiful water”.
Ontario has about 250,000 freshwater lakes and rivers, and its northern regions are heavily forested and sparsely populated. As a result, there are amazing wilderness areas to explore. Traditionally, the area was crossed by canoe or dog team – so, our canoeing and dog sledding (and sea kayaking) adventures trace waterways that were paddled and travelled by early First Nations people, explorers, missionaries, and fur traders.
